“From the beginning, I was very excited about the process of figuring out how to provide a solution to transform this old kitchen to a comfortably laid out full bath…” – Paris
Submissions poured in from across the American Northeast and Duravit USA has crowned the winner for its 7th annual Designer Dream Bath Competition; Paris Kostopoulos and Tina Psoinos of the boutique design and architecture firm Paris K. Design.
This renovation began with a complete reimagining of the whole layout. The setting: a New York City apartment with a growing family and limited room. They wanted a new full bath for visiting family and friends. The space that would become this award-winning bathroom was originally a kitchen. As you’d imagine, this created some unique challenges. The plumbing had to be rerouted along with all walls restructured and repositioned.
The team utilized the Duravit Starck wall-hung toilet paired with the innovative SensoWash Smart Seat that allowed them to run along the walls until reaching the the risers a carefully designed web of drainage and supply lines along with niches and valves, to facilitate the shifted locations. To make the feat even more impressive, the electrical panel housing all the electrical and lighting lines for that section of the apartment were placed inside the same walls. “The complexity of all the electrical with the plumbing created a challenge that was overcome with careful positioning,” says Paris.
The lighting plays an integral role in contrasting the clean design and utility of the plumbing fixtures against Florim’s porcelain tile that embodies the new trend of large-format tile, substituting the traditional use of stone slabs. A custom step assists transition in and out of the bathtub and provides the needed warmth of the walnut wood, coordinating with the wonderfully soft shaped Happy D vanity by Duravit in a walnut finish.
The final result was even better than the team and clients had anticipated or even hoped. “As soon as the finishes were completed, I was exhilarated to find that my client’s kids now preferred this bathroom more than any of the four baths in this apartment. The result is a calming and modern space,” Paris remarked.
